We come to the conclusion of the reading of the New Testament by reading the Writings of John. One Tip: When you read the book of Revelation, just read it through this time. Don’t try to figure out what all the symbols mean. Read and enjoy and gain the blessing that is promised to “those who read.”

John

Reading 95: 1741-1750

Reading 96: 1750-1765

Reading 97: 1765-1771

Thought To Contemplate
From eternity past to eternity present to eternity future, Jesus was presented as God’s eternal word.

1, 2, & 3 John

Reading 98: 1775-1779

Reading 98: 1783

Reading 98: 1787

Thought To Contemplate. 1 John
The reading and participation in the practices of this book should bring the same joy that John experienced in writing the book.

Thought To Contemplate. 2 John
If you are having a difficult time loving a brother or sister, check out your own belief system. Being impregnated with false teaching always leads to a dislike of others.

Thought To Contemplate. 3 John
Church discipline is a necessary reality.

Revelation

Reading 99 1791-1800

Reading 100 1800-1812

Thought To Contemplate
There really is a new heaven and a new earth on which the children will rest for all eternity.

Reading Guide

You can read using the following guide and take your readings a bit slower. To read at a 100 day pace, read the page numbers in the 100 Day column. To read at a 200 day pace, read the page numbers in the 200 Day column. To read at a 300 day pace, read the page numbers in the 300 Day column. You create the days of the week you want to read.

On average, the 100 day column is about forty-five minutes to an hour. The 200 Day column is about thirty minutes. The 300 day column is about fifteen-twenty minutes. Remember, some folks read faster and some folks read slower and the times above are built on an average of about 250-300 words a minute. Of course, this is pure reading time, not reading and stop-to-think time or meditating time, not reading and discussion time, and not reading and sharing in the Comments section below. It is just reading time!

We continue to read chronologically from First Timothy through Jude.

1 Timothy | Titus | 2 Timothy

Reading 89: 1607-1611

Reading 89: 1615-1616

Reading 89: 1619-1622

Thought To Contemplate. 1 Timothy
Guard what has been entrusted to your care.

Thought To Contemplate. Titus
We must learn to devote ourselves to what is good.

Thought To Contemplate. 2 Timothy
It is never too late to find and help those who need encouragement. Retirement in Christianity does not seem to be an option.

1 & 2 Peter

Reading 90: 1723-1727

Reading 90: 1731-1733

Thought To Contemplate. 1 Peter
Suffering is a part of the package of being a believer. It is not necessarily because you have done something wrong that you suffer. You often suffer as a believer because you live in a world and a country that is not Christian and never has been. The result of living in a hostile world will always be suffering.

Thought To Contemplate. 2 Peter
Do not be deceived by any teaching that proclaims that Jesus will return at a specific time. No one knows this information.

Matthew

Reading 91: 1625-1637

Reading 92: 1637-1653

Reading 93: 1653-1665

Thought To Contemplate
The new birth that you have experienced is only the beginning. God’s desire to make sure that you can grow in the Rule of God in your life is fully demonstrated by the inclusion of the Gospel of Matthew into the Bible. As you read it, let the Rule of God become stronger and stronger in your life. Blessings!

Hebrews | Jude

Reading 94: 1669-1682

Reading 94: 1737-1738

Thought To Contemplate. Hebrews
Sin has been adequately dealt with in the birth, life, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus.

Thought To Contemplate. Jude
Contending for the faith delivered implies it has been delivered. If you do not know the foundations of the faith, it is incumbent on you to find out what Christianity believes.

This does not follow the ordering of the books in The Books of the Bible™, rather it follows the ordering that I used in my book God’s EPIC Adventure.

James | 1 & 2 Thessalonians

Reading 82: 1507-1510

Reading 82: 1513-1515

Thought To Contemplate. James
True religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.

Thought To Contemplate. 1 & 2 Thessalonians
When facing trouble and you need some vital information for relief, it is an acceptable biblical position to turn to the one or ones that were part of your initial spiritual formation. Don’t fret! Jesus is coming!</

1 & 2 Corinthians

Reading 83: 1519-1534

Reading 84: 1539-1548

Thought To Contemplate 1 & 2 Corinthians
Problems do not go away when we become Christians. However, we do have someone to help us solve them. Financial giving for the support of God’s ministry is based on the model of the self-giving of Jesus not on a legalistic percentage.

Romans

Reading 85: 1559-1576

Thought To Contemplate
Allow the power of the Holy Spirit to make you into the image of Jesus by following the teaching of Paul in the last chapters of Romans.

Mark

Reading 86: 1695-1706

Reading 87: 1706-1719

Thought To Contemplate
The power of Jesus is still available to convert and change our lives.

Philemon | Colossians | Ephesians | Philippians

Reading 88: 1595-1596

Reading 88: 1581-1584

Reading 88: 1587-1592

Reading 88: 1599-1603

Thought To Contemplate. Philemon
Influence your friends toward a decision for Christ instead of condemning them for their social misbehaving.

Thought To Contemplate. Colossians
Be aware of any teaching that devalues the supremacy of Christ.

Thought To Contemplate. Ephesians
The strength of the church determines the strength of the families and other relationships within it.

Thought To Contemplate. Philippians
Find a good mature Christian model and imitate him or her.

We begin the New Testament readings in Luke-Acts. While not the first of the New Testament books to be written, Luke-Acts takes us through the essential story of the New Testament. In Luke the Story of Jesus and in Acts the Story of the Church’s beginnings.

Luke-Acts

Reading 75: 1419-1429

Reading 76: 1429-1441

Reading 77: 1441-1451

Reading 78: 1451-1466

Reading 79: 1466-1479

Reading 80: 1479-1493

Reading 81: 1493-1501 (continues with Galatians)

Galatians

Reading 81: 1551-1556

Thought To Contemplate. Luke-Acts
The Gospel is for everyone regardless of race, color, or religious background. It appears to be the attitude of Acts to observe what the Spirit is doing and where the Spirit is going and to follow.

Thought To Contemplate. Galatians
If you are challenged by a rigid church system, reading Galatians several times may allow the work of the Holy Spirit to soften your outlook on who is welcome at the table of Jesus.

We continue reading the Prophets with Ezekiel, a Southern Prophet who prophesied againt Judah. Then, Habakkuk, a Southern Prophet who suggested to Judah that the just live because of the faithfulness of God. We now move into the Exile Stage in the Old Testament with Lamentations, a eulogy of mourning of the fall of Jerusalem and Daniel, a narrative and apocalyptic story set within this time frame from within Second Temple Judaism. Finally, Obadiah, who prophesied about Edom’s mistreatment of Judeans during the Babylonian destruction of Jerusalem.

Ezekiel

Reading 60: 813-830

Reading 61: 830-854

Reading 62: 854-878

Thought To Contemplate
God can speak more than one way to get his message to his children.

Habakkuk | Lamentations

Reading 63: 691-696; 1091-1105

Thought To Contemplate. HabakkukIt is okay to question God when you are unsure.

Thought To Contemplate. Lamentations
Allow Lamentations to remind you of the horrifying consequences of sin. May it also help you understand that you are not beyond the help of God. Confession of sin will surely bring forgiveness.

Daniel

Reading 64: 1393-1410

Thought To Contemplate
Being faithful to God even during trying times brings rewards. God is faithful even during judgment.

Obadiah

Reading 65: 807-809

Thought To Contemplate
It may be in our best interest to take some responsibility for our brothers and sisters in the Lord.

Thought To Contemplate. Samuel
In life, we all experience pressures from all sides to give in and fall short of what God expects from us as participants in his Story. We can choose to fall away from God or return to God when we fail. The choice is ours.

Thought To Contemplate. Kings
Solomon began well but ended poorly. Solomon, in all his wisdom granted by God, chose to defy God. The result was staggering: A broken kingdom. Life is made up of choices. It is possible for us to begin well and end well as we continually develop our relationship with God and live within his Story.

We now come to the Book of Psalms. The authors of Psalms stretch across the panorama of the Old Testament. The traditional 150 Psalms are divided into five books. For reading help, they are written in parallelism, a Hebrew form of thought-rhyme. The most common form of this kind of writing is synonymous, which means that the second line of in the poem says the same thing as the first line using different words to express the same thought. Where we get tripped up, is that we read the Psalms with a steady pace without giving the vocal or mental break that is due each line. And because we most likely read like Westerners, we think that they should be read like we read anything, one sentence after another, where the second sentence often expands the first sentence but does not say the same thing. So we often read two lines of a Psalm and then exegete it as two different thoughts instead of one thought expressed two different ways.

Example

The ox knows its master,
    the donkey its owner’s manger,
but Israel does not know,
    my people do not understand.”

The first two lines say the same thing only differently. The second two lines also say the same thing only differently.

While there are other kinds of parallelism in the Old Testament, this one will get you a long way in reading, not only here in the Psalms but also in the Prophets which have long sections that are poetry.

C. S. Lewis once said, “The Psalms must be read as poems; as lyrics, with all the licenses and all the formalities, the hyperboles, the emotional rather than the logical connections, which are proper to lyric poetry” (God’s EPIC Adventure, 131).

Thought To Contemplate
God is interested in our worship. There are many ways to worship him that go beyond praise. Israel had a category of worship in the Psalms called “Complaint Psalms,” corporate and individual. Complaining to God as a form of worship is something one should try, and without guilt, I might add.
